How to Spy
You can go high-tech with your spying, or you can do it the old-fashioned way--in person. Perhaps you want to follow a spouse, or you must have your neighbor’s secret coconut pie recipe. At any rate, try some secret spy techniques on your next covert mission.

1
Pick up your spouse’s cell phone when he is not in the room and secretly read the stored text messages. If your spouse deleted them, ask the cell phone provider to send you a detailed call list so you can see the numbers your spouse called and who called him.
-
2
Purchase a miniature pinhole camera for your spy missions and hide it carefully in your clothing so you can record your surroundings without anyone knowing. This is especially good for those times when you’re in a restricted area where you're not supposed to have a regular camera.

3
Make your own fingerprinting kit with small squares of thin acrylic and clear plastic packing tape. When you find a fingerprint on a smooth, nonporous surface, lightly place a bit of the tape directly on the print and lift carefully. Place the tape, sticky side down, on the piece of acrylic and save it in an envelope. Make sure not to get your own fingerprints on the acrylic or the tape.
-
4
Buy the strongest binoculars you can afford for watching your subject from a safe distance. If you’re following someone, they may sense your presence if you’re too close.
-
5
Pretend to talk on your cell phone when you’re spying on the spouse of a jealous friend, but use your phone’s camera function and take pictures instead. In addition to still shots, many cell phones offer low-resolution video capability.
-
6
Check your state’s laws to determine whether or not you can record a phone conversation. Some states allow one-person consent, meaning that if one person who is a party to the conversation consents, the tape is admissible in court. If your state allows this, you can record all your own phone conversations, since you are the consenting party.
-
7
Plan your surveillance ahead of time. Visit Google Earth and get satellite printouts of the area before you begin your stakeout. Plan escape route, and familiarize yourself with the surroundings.
-
8
Collect various disguises. Forget about the big glasses and plastic nose thing, which will only draw attention to your presence. Instead, practice different ways of fixing your hair, try on different styles of clothing and try walking differently with each different disguise.
