Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
Choose a museum that is fairly close by. A trip of more than 30 minutes each way will eat into the time needed for a tour and meal stop. Plan for a half-day trip from start to finish.Call ahead to see if the museum offers group rates. Arrange for carpools or a van (if seniors live in a facility that provides them).
Step2
Provide information to the group on the exhibits currently at the museum, such as a flyer or a brief fact sheet. Ask the group in advance if they would like to participate in a docent-led tour or just browse the exhibits on their own. Set a place and time to meet for those who will be taking self-guided tours.
Step3
Limit the group to no more than 8 or 10 individuals so that you can monitor whereabouts and interact comfortably with each other.
Step4
Plan to spend 2 hours visiting the exhibits, then break for lunch or afternoon tea at the museum's cafe. Don’t forget to schedule in a half hour or so before or after lunch to browse through the gift shop.
Step5
Follow up after the visit with a discussion group, or even an art class, for those who are interested. Ask for feedback or suggestions about future visits. Remember that not everyone will be enchanted with the art, but that’s okay. The purpose of art is to stimulate thoughts and ideas.
