How to Celebrate Elvis' Birthday

Elvis Presley fans put no limits on how far they’ll go for their idol, so a party to celebrate his birthday is a natural. Anyone who enjoys recreating the '50s will get a kick out of the Elvis theme. And, of course, you’ll want to plan this for January 8, Elvis’ big day.

Instructions

    • 1

Invite guests to come to the King’s birthday party dressed as either Elvis look-alikes or his fans from the 1950s, complete with saddle shoes and full skirts.

    • 2

Decorate the party room and/or table by hauling out all things Elvis that you own: record jackets, photos, magazine articles, etc. You can also hang 45 rpm records on strings from the ceiling. If you don’t own any of these, simply make them out of black construction paper glued to cardboard.

    • 3

Have Elvis music playing as guests arrive. You’ll want to include all the favorites—making sure you don’t forget “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Hound Dog” and “Jailhouse Rock.” For added fun, pass out the lyrics to these songs (and others). You’ll have to pry guests away from the resulting sing-along.

    • 4

Rent several Elvis movies (or check them out from the library) . Show these as a background to other party activities, letting guests become absorbed in whatever parts they can’t tear themselves away from. Some films you’ll want to make sure you include are “Love Me Tender,” “Jailhouse Rock” and “Blue Hawaii.”

    • 5

Plan the refreshments. You could simply go with Elvis’ favorite fried peanut butter and banana sandwiches, but if you want to get a little fancier, About.com has recipes for King-approved fare like“Crispy Fried Catfish,” “Delicious Buttermilk Cornbread” and many others. For beverages, what could be more fitting for the King of Rock and Roll than R.C.(Royal Crown) Cola? For dessert, order an old-fashioned sheet cake decorated with roses and icing spelling the words, “Happy Birthday Elvis. January 8. We Love You.” You might also consider adding the correct number of candles—Elvis was born in 1935.

Plan an Elvis trivia game. Bone up on the rock and roll icon's biography at the official Elvis.com and draw up a bunch of questions based on the information you find. If you’re feeling flush, you can even go to Shopelvis.com and buy a prize for the winner of the trivia contest (or favors for all your guests).
