How to Make Denim Flowers

This is a cute and simple flower that uses up all of those scraps of denim you have left over from other projects. It's also a great way to recycle the good pieces from worn out jeans. It's also a great use for the cut off pant legs from jeans that are cut into denim shorts. You can make single flowers to give away, or you can make a whole bouquet to decorate with.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Pieces of Denim Material
  • Dowel Rods (12" long)
  • Sewing Machine
  • Contrasting Thread
  • Pillow Stuffing
  • Craft Glue
  1. Step 1

Cut three circles for each flower. The easiest way to do this is to use a large plastic cup. Sit it upside down on the material, and draw around it. Now just cut along the lines. Pin each flower together in sets of three. You need three circles per flower.

  2. Step 2

Draw a circle in the middle of each stack of three. A round spice jar works really well for making the right size circle. You want the circle to look like the center of the flower. You may need to adjust your circle sizes accordingly.

  3. Step 3

Set your sewing machine to either a small zigzag or an applique stitch. You can actually use whatever decorative stitch that you like, but the look of the tighter applique stitch is generally preferred. Stitch completely around the inner circle on the flower, stitching all three layers together.

  4. Step 4

Cut a small slit in the backside of the flower. This should be done just inside the stitching area of the circle. Try to only slit through one layer of the circle. The slit only needs to be big enough to insert the small dowel rod. Push small amounts of the pillow stuffing up into the slit, to give the flower center a little depth and puffiness.

  5. Step 5

Spread a thin layer of craft glue on the end of the dowel rod and insert it into the slit. Your flower now has a stem! Use your fingers or tweezers to pull the threads from around the outer circles of your flower to fray it all of the way around. You can tie ribbons on your flower, or glue some leaves to your flower stem if you'd like.

Tips & Warnings
  • These make great kid crafts once you have done the inner circle sewing for them. Make up a bunch, and let kids put them together.
  • Paint the dowel rods green before you insert them.
  • Observe children closely if they assist you in this project. Any needle or sharp object is a hazard around a child.
