The MPEG2 video format is a popular way to store movies and other videos on a computer or digital video player, Of course, there may be times when you will want to be able to burn those movies and videos onto a DVD so that it can be watched on a standard DVD player. Provided you have the right software on your computer, it's actually quite easy to do this; all of the format conversions that are needed will be done automatically by the software before it burns the files to a DVD.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Computer with a DVD burner
  • DVD burning software
  • DVD-R or DVD+R disc
  • Video file or files in .mpg or .mpeg format
Step1
Open your DVD burner drive and insert your blank DVD. While some DVD burning software doesn't require the disc to be inserted until it is ready to actually burn the movie to the DVD, inserting it beforehand will prevent any errors that may occur if your software is picky about whether it has the disc from the beginning or not.
Step2
Launch your DVD burning software. Most likely you will be presented with several different options as to how you can proceed; select "Start a new DVD project" or "Burn a Video File to DVD" (or a similarly phrased option).
Step3
You should now have the option to add video files to your disc project. Select this option and a new selection window should open up. In this window you should select the file or files that you wish to burn to a DVD. Once you have added the video files to your DVD project, press the "Next" or "OK" button to continue.
Step4
The next page should give you options for setting up your DVD menu and adding any effects, animations, or auto-play features that you want. When everything is the way that you want it for your DVD menu, press the "Next" or "OK' button again.
Step5
The final screen that you see with most DVD burning software is a review screen. This will show you the settings that you have chosen and will give you a final chance to make any changes before starting. If you're satisfied with the settings, select the "Burn" or "OK" button.
Step6
The program will begin converting the MPEG2 video files into a format that it uses to burn them to the DVD. This conversion process may take an hour or more, depending on the length of the video files. Once it has finished the conversion, the program will burn the video files and the DVD menu to the disc in the DVD burner. The disc should eject automatically when the burning process is complete.

Tips & Warnings

  • There are 2 major types of recordable DVD's, listed as DVD-R and DVD+R. While many modern DVD players can play movies off of both formats, make sure that the format you choose can be played by your specific DVD player model.
  • Check the maximum write speed on the DVD before burning video files to it . Make sure that the software is set to burn at a slower speed than that. Failure to do so will likely result in problems for the burning process, and will likely cause the burn to fail.
