How to Fix Dry or Damaged Hair

From products to blowouts, diet to stress, sun to sand, it's no wonder so many women suffer from dry and damaged hair. And sometimes, many of us are just born with dry hair and don't do much to help the situation. In just a few simple steps, you can fix your dry and damaged hair and have that healthy, silky mane you've always wanted.

      Fix your diet. Your hair is only as healthy as the food you eat. Make sure you drink plenty of water, and load up on lean proteins like fish and chicken as well as monounsaturated fats found in olive oil and nuts to strengthen hair and improve its shine and health.

      Get a trim. While it's tempting to go long periods between cuts, regular trimming prevents split ends, keeps hair shiny and healthy and keeps it from becoming brittle and damaged.

      Take a break from styling products and tools. Spend a few days without excessive products, like mouses, gels and hair sprays as well as styling tools like blow dryers, curling irons and straightening irons. This break should help improve the condition of dry and damaged hair. If you must use products, use them sparingly. Try blow drying or curling hair on a cool setting to minimize damage. Consider taking a break from coloring hair, as that also causes damage and dryness.

      Condition. Look for a conditioner expressly formulated for dry and damaged hair. Use a deep conditioner two to three times a week to strengthen hair and minimize damage. Look for color-treated products if you color your hair.
