Plan an out-of-this-world lunch by having kids create their own edible aliens. Explain that they will be creating a “fruit alien” and a “veggie alien.” Cut sheets of aluminum foil into rocket shapes, one for each guest. Have the kids fashion alien pilots to put on top of these rockets, using a piece of cauliflower for a head, celery sticks for antennae and black olives for body parts. Other workable vegetables might include broccoli, zucchini, carrots and cherry tomatoes. “Fruit aliens” can be created from banana slices, berries, apple wedges and pineapple chunks. Take photos of the creatures to send home as favors. Serve with simple sandwiches, like peanut butter and jelly or cheese.

Make flying saucers. Give kids paper plates to decorate with colorful markers, including silver and gold. Then staple the decorated sides together. Have flying contests to see whose vehicle can fly the farthest, or which one can come closest to a “landing pad.”

Play the UFO game. Players sit in a circle. The first player says, “My alien is unbelievable" (or some other word starting with the letter U, for UFO). The second player says, “My alien is unbelievable and ferocious.” The third player says, “My alien is unbelievable, ferocious and obnoxious.” The fourth player must repeat all of these and then add another adjective beginning with the letter “U,” and so on. Players drop out when they can’t think of another word that fits the sequence. The last remaining player is the winner.

For dessert, give each kid a rounded scoop of vanilla ice cream in a bowl and tell him that it is a new planet. Then set out the toppings, which have been labeled as follows: chocolate sauce (rivers), chopped nuts (rocks),marshmallow topping (clouds) and maraschino cherries (vegetation). The kids can “decorate” their new planet, name it and then enjoy eating it.
