How to Make Wood Ramps

With a few materials and a few basic tools, anyone can build ramps out of wood. This style of ramp is specifically for skateboarding but with a few modifications can mutate for other purposes. Have in mind where you want the ramp to go. A great place is in the backyard or somewhere that it will not be in the way.

    Things You'll Need

    • Tape measure
    • pencil
    • hammer
    • saw
    • pressure treated wood
    • plywood
    • sander
    • nails
    • possible building permit.
    1. How to Build Wood Ramps

      • 1

Take two, two by fours that are at least eight ft long for the bottom of the ramp. This will hold it all up. Using your tape measure, measure on both sides of your 2x4s in a couple of ft. Check measurements on both ends and mark them with your pencil.

      • 2

Figure out how high you want your ramp to be. Then cut some additional 2x4s to make the sides. These will be vertical to give your ramp its height. Once your wood is cut to size, you will need to secure them with galvanized nails. Hammer in your nails on the bottom of each 2x4 to hold them together.

      • 3

Measure, mark with pencil and cut a couple more 2x4s. These pieces of wood are going to secure the bottom from the first vertical side. The size necessary will vary on your height of ramp. Once in place, nail them to the bottom using your galvanized nails.

      • 4

Cut yet another two pieces of wood to go across the tops, connecting the two sides. Nail them together. Get your plywood about 3/4 in. thick. The plywood is to fit over the bottom of the frame. Make sure the plywood starts at the end, curving to make your ramp. Then nail it into place.

      • 5

Bracing your ramp: Cut some more 2x4s to make about five braces. You will need short and long pieces. The braces will support the plywood curve. Take your pieces of wood and sand a slant on one end of each piece. Check, your braces under the curve to ensure a perfect fit then nail them into place.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Additional sanding may be necessary.

    • Test your ramp before skating on it. You can do this by walking on it, even jumping. Also, check your ramp for nails stuck out.
