Use a Contraception Coil

Knowing if a contraception coil is right for you is the first step in making a contraception choice that will meet your needs.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make an appointment to talk to your doctor about contraception options. While waiting on your appointment, do some reading on the contraception coil (IUD) and other family planning options.

  2. Step 2

Make the decision as to whether the contraception coil might be a good option for you and then talk to your doctor about the benefits and possible side effects.

  3. Step 3

Ask your doctor to schedule a time for your contraception coil to be inserted. The procedure takes about ten minutes and is usually done during the your monthly cycle. Some women find insertion to be uncomfortable or slightly painful, but since the procedure is quick most do not find the discomfort to be a deterrant.

  4. Step 4

Remember that once the coil is inserted, it provides protection from pregnancy immediately. You do need to check your contraceptive coil on a monthly basis to make sure that it is still in place. Do this by checking for the strings that hang from the coil. If anything does not seem normal, contact your doctor immediately and use a backup method of birth control until your appointment.

Tips & Warnings
  • Be aware of the potential side effects of a contraception coil. The most common are heavier periods that may last longer or be more painful.
