How to Lighten Hair Naturally

Hair lightening can be costly and damaging to hair due to all of the chemical ingredients. For some, a concern about chemicals prevents them from lightening their hair. People with lighter shades of hair color have options for lightening their hair naturally. These methods are relatively inexpensive. The method described here is only for those with light shades of hair color who are willing to lighten their hair gradually over time.

Things You'll Need:

  • Lemon juice
  • Warm water
  • Conditioner
  • Sunlight
  • Time
  1. Step 1

    Mix 2 tablespoons of lemon juice with 1 gallon of warm water.

    Rinse hair with mixture, Be sure to thoroughly wet all strands, especially those that form the top layer of hair. You can do this by dipping your head into the container of lemon water or by slowly pouring the lemon water over your head while it is over a sink. You can also do this while in the shower.

  3. Step 3

    Allow your wet hair to dry in the sun. Be sure to protect your skin from sun damage with sunscreen while you lighten your hair outdoors. You will need 30 minutes to an hour in the sun.

  4. Step 4

    Wash hair and condition. Lemon juice can be drying to hair, so keeping hair hydrated and conditioned is important.

  5. Step 5

    Repeat this process daily until your hair reaches the degree of lightness you wish to achieve.

  • Because results may vary, it is always best to try lightening your hair when you have time and access to help should something not turn out right. Trying to lighten your hair right before an important event is never a good idea.
  • People with darker or red hair colors risk getting orange hair by using many types of hair lightening, including many natural methods. Even products from the store can create orange or purple coloration if not chosen or used correctly. When in doubt, try the method on a test strand first.
