How to Change an IP Address

Releasing and renewing your IP address is a lot easier than you think. Even if you are not the most computer literate person around, this is one computer application that a beginner can do. It can be done very quickly with these easy steps.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Turn on computer and make sure it is connected to the Internet.

  2. Step 2

    Open a Command Prompt window by going to the Start Menu, clicking "Run" and then typing "CMD" in the box, minus the quotes. Then press "Enter."

  3. Step 3

    A Command Prompt window will open. Next type "ipconfig" (minus the quotes), and press "Enter." This will show your current IP address.

  4. Step 4

    Now type "ipconfig /release", minus the quote, and press "Enter." This will release your current IP address from your computer.

  5. Step 5

    Finally, type "ipconfig /renew", minus the quotes, and press "Enter." This will assign your computer a new IP address. When you are finished close the Command Prompt window.
