In order to write authentically, many writers turn to ancient practices like yoga, qi gong and t'ai chi in order to harness the wisdom of the body and bring that truth to the page. Here is how you can use yoga to improve your writing.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yoga mat
  • Pen
  • Paper
  1. Step 1

Being centered is a key component to writing authentically. Taking a few moments to exercise or meditate before writing is a great way to take a moment and set an intention for the day's work.

  2. Step 2

Try to concentrate on slowing down your exhalations as you write. The conscious attention paid to the breath will bring you into the present and allow you to write calmly and fluidly, without distraction or interjection from your inner editor.

  3. Step 3

While doing your yoga routine, pay attention to your writing intention and note any images or emotions that arise while you practice. Try to dig deeper into those images before you stop moving, then sit down and write about the colors, thoughts and feelings that appeared in your mind's eye.
