In the summertime, you can fill your house with bouquets of wildflowers. Wildflowers are available everywhere, including ditches and fields. Flowers such as Queen Anne’s Lace and Brown-Eyed Susans are widely available and can be made into a beautiful bouquet. The type of flowers you use is entirely up to you. Some bouquets can be comprised of a single species of flower, while others can have many. Putting wildflower bouquets in containers like milk jugs can be a cute way of displaying them. If you have a fancier setting, wildflowers can even be put into nice vases. The choice of flowers, and containers is up to you and the look you are wishing to achieve.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Field of flowers
  • Scissors
  • Flower container
  1. Step 1

Find a field of wildflowers. Make sure you have permission to go onto the property.

  2. Step 2

Decide which flowers you want to include in your bouquet. If you want to include more than one flower type, make sure the colors you have look nice together. Bouquets made of only yellow flowers may be interesting, but adding a few purple flowers can make it entirely different.

  3. Step 3

Cut the flowers using your scissors, making sure to leave the stems long. You can always cut off more of the stem later, and it will be disappointing to find that you have cut them too short. Also make sure that you cut more flowers than you think you may need. Inevitably, there will be some flowers you have collected that you will not want to use, and it will be good to have extras.

  4. Step 4

Shake the flowers off very well. A drawback of using wildflowers is that they can have a lot of insects on them. Giving them a good shake will dislodge most of the insects. Giving the flowers a brief and gentle rinse is another good way of freeing them from bugs.

  5. Step 5

Place your flowers out on a table or countertop so you can see all of them.

  6. Step 6

Trim the leaves from the bottom of the flowers, until just above where you think the water will hit them. When leaves are left on the flowers, they will foul the water more quickly and your bouquet will not last as long.

  7. Step 7

Taking some of the largest flowers, or the ones with the longest stems, place them in your container first.

  8. Step 8

Continue placing flowers into your container. If you are using a single species of flowers, make sure to add flowers of differing heights to give the bouquet added dimension. If you are using a couple different species, arrange them so that each species is interspersed within the bouquet and looks balanced when you are finished.

  9. Step 9

Fill the container with water. You want to do this last in case you have to remove some flowers and play around with their arrangement. Filling the container first would leave you with wet flowers.

Tips & Warnings
  • Watch out for stinging insects, which love the nectar of wildflowers.
