A blind stitch is used to hem garments. The reason you use a blind stitch is because you don’t want the thread to show on the outside of the garment, hence the word “blind.” You want the item to look as it if it was made in the perfect length for you. Here are the steps for hand sewing a blind stitch.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Clothing item that needs to be hemmed
  1. Step 1

Fold the item where you want to hem it and iron it in place. This will ensure that your hem remains straight.

  2. Step 2

Fold the ironed hem of the fabric back creating an edge where you will sew the edge of the fabric to the garment.

  3. Step 3

Hold the needle with your dominant hand, working from the opposite direction toward your dominant hand. Your needle should be pointing toward your less dominant hand.

  4. Step 4

Poke the needle through the fabric picking up only a sliver of fabric that will not show through the other side. In the same movement, make a stitch into the edge of the fabric you are hemming.

  5. Step 5

Continue sewing toward your dominant hand repeating this stitch. Each time you make a stitch, you will be meeting your last stitch.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep your stitches small.
  • Do not pull the thread too tight.
