Decorating a room requires different elements in order to acquire the desired look. Many times when decorating, there seems to be something missing. The element that is usually neglected is texture. Texture in decorating is something you want to reach out and touch or feel. Adding texture to a room will bring a room together and give it a 3-dimensional look.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Wall covering
  • Bamboo or reed
  • Curtains or drapery
  • Baskets and pottery
  • Paintings
  • Pillows
  • Candles
Step1
Apply a wall covering to the walls. Today's vast selection of wall coverings is unlimited. Using natural tones will bring a warm mood to a room.
Step2
Try using fabric on the bottom half of a wall or use natural wall coverings such as bamboo and reed for a more natural look. By using any source from nature, the use of texture is incorporated in decorating.
Step3
Paint a wall with a faux finish that resembles stone or wood. Sponge painting and rag painting adds texture to a room by giving the look of a natural stone. Adding large paintings in decorative frames to the walls will add dimension to a room.
Step4
Use curtains and draperies to add texture. These come in a variety of fabrics, such as weaved or satin that will create a finished look to a room.
Step5
Place straw baskets and pieces of pottery around the room. Fill vases with rocks or sand. Again, these are natural elements that add to decorating with texture.
Step6
Use moldings, such as crown molding and baseboards. If the room is painted a color, paint the moldings white to add contrast to the room.
Step7
Add lots of pillows made of different fabrics. Pillows are the easiest way to add texture to a couch, chair or bed. Use pillows made with natural fabrics or decorate them with braid and cords.
Step8
Candles of different shapes and sizes create a relaxed mood. To add texture to a candle, wrap a ribbon or piece of straw around a candle.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adding plants, whether artificial or real, will bring nature into a room. Nature is full of texture.
  • Make sure that the colors that are being incorporated into a room ultimately match.
  • When adding living plants, make sure that no one has allergies to those plants.
