Making a potato stamper is a great way to keep kids entertained and to help them actually make some of their own art supplies. Not only can kids help their parents to make them, but the stamper can be tailored to any shape that the child would like it to actually be.These stampers can be found right in your own kitchen. It’s a fun activity that will keep kids busy for quite awhile, let parents have a fun activity to do with their child, and it’s very easy to do.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Raw potato
  • Pencil or pen
  • Knife
  • Paint
Step1
Choose an uncooked potato to use as the potato stamper. The size of the potato that you will want to use all depends on the size of the shape that is going to be carved into the potato. A smaller potato will be good for doing shapes such as hearts, smiley faces, circles, triangles, squares or stars. Larger potatoes will be good for doing more complicated shapes such as trucks or flowers. When you have your chosen potato, cut it in half.
Step2
Have the child trace a shape into the flat, fleshy part of the potato that you cut. Whether they use a pencil or a pen, make sure that the edges of the shapes aren’t too close to the edge of the potato and that the lines are clear enough that you can see it while you are making the stamper. Since the option for details is going to be minimal, keep the shapes basic and simple--something that can easily be distinguished when they are stamped onto paper.
Step3
Cut out the area around the shape. Using the tip of a sharp knife, cut out the fleshy part of the potato around the shape, leaving the shape intact. Do it a little piece at a time so that you don’t accidentally chip away at the shape.
Step4
Dip your potato stamper into any paint that you wish and make beautiful pictures. Use only a little paint on the stamper, just enough to coat the shape and make sure to stamp down lightly and not to smash the potato into the picture.

Tips & Warnings

  • Although this is an activity for kids and parents, parents should always be present during the process and only do the actual cutting of the potato themselves.
