How to Change Addresses on Passports
Having a passport is a wonderful thing. It allows you to travel from place to place, unhindered at borders, and ensures that you will receive aid if you find yourself in trouble abroad. While United States passports don't carry address data in them, the U.S. State Department does keep your address information on file, as well as necessary emergency contact information.

- Application from (DS-5504)
- Valid passport
- Proof of of address change
- Copy of Driver's License or State Photo I.D.
- Check or money order for $75 to U.S. State Department
- 2 identical photographs to go on your passport

Obtain State Department form DS-5504. This is the application form that you will use to apply for the address change. You can obtain the form either by calling the State Department's Main Switchboard at 202-647-4000 or for TTY, use: 1-800-877-8339.

Fill out the documentation, including your old and new address. This will allow the State Department to update your contact information. If your passport is less than one year old, you're done. However, if your passport is over one year old, you will have to apply for a renewal.

Enclose a check or money order for $75 in the envelope with your DS-5504. The check should be made out to the U.S. State Department. Enclose your original passport, as well.

Tips & Warnings
Always allow at least 6-8 weeks for processing of your passport. However, you can apply for expedited service, if you're in a rush to travel. Simply check the appropriate box on the form marked "Expedite" and include the increased fees.
Changing your address with the State Department is a requirement. Even though it's not listed on your passport, you must do it. Don't forget, however, to change your emergency contact information, as well, if the emergency contact moved with you!
