How to Install a Pair of New Car Subwoofers and Amplifier
-
1
Pick out the area where you'll install the subwoofers. You'll need to consider a location that has ample room for the subwoofers and their enclosure, and one that won't interfere with the primary use of the car (i.e., hauling people, equipment, etc.). Once you've selected the area, place the subwoofer box in the vehicle, and mount it securely. You can buy clamps from many electronics retailers or home improvement stores. Screw the clamps down with sheet metal screws to the car, and wood screw to the box. An unsecured subwoofer enclosure can be a definite danger in the event of an accident.

2
Mount the amplifier. It's best to keep the amplifier fairly close to the subwoofers, as this ensures you'll need less speaker wire to send the signal to the subwoofers. You'll enjoy better sound quality with a shorter wiring run. Ensure that the amplifier is mounted in a location that'll stay dry, and has adequate air space around it. Amplifiers produce heat as a byproduct of their operation, and if too much heat builds up, there's a danger of overheating, causing amplifier shut down or possible damage.

Connect the amplifier to the signal source, in most cases the receiver or head unit. If the receiver has preamp outputs, use RCA patch cables -- they'll provide the best signal quality. If your receiver doesn't have preamp outputs, you'll need to tap into the vehicle's speaker wires for a "speaker level input." It's necessary for your amp to have speaker-level inputs for this to work, so be sure to check this out ahead of time.

Connect the amplifier to the power source and turn on lead. You'll need to run a power cable with a fuse from the battery to the amplifier. Consult the amplifier's manual for wiring specifications and fuse suggestions. Run the cable in as safe a location as possible, being careful not to cut the cord when installing it, to ensure against possible short circuits. Connect the power cable to the amplifier and run a ground cable from the amplifier to a metal portion of the vehicle. The floor board is usually a good location. Be careful that the ground and power cables are kept out of damp or wet spots.

Connect the amplifier to the subwoofers with speaker wire. Use the proper gauge, as specified by the amplifier and subwoofer manufacturers. Set the proper amplifier gain following the amplifier manufacturer's instructions, and tune the settings to your liking by listening to some of your favorite tracks.
