How to Take Care of Leather Furniture

You walk into a room and there is the magnificent leather sofa and love seat set. When you sit on it the texture just emits elegance and affluence. You know that every time you have guests over they also feel the comfort that you do. To keep that expensive leather living room set looking good takes patience, care and some common sense. Things You'll Need

  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Castor oil
  • Petroleum jelly
  • Cotton swabs
  • Sponge
  • Ammonia
  • Vomegar
  • Water
  • Soft dry cloth
  • Gloves
  • Saddle soap

Instructions

      Dust or vacuum leather upholstery once a week.

      Put your gloves on, then clean the furniture with saddle soap when necessary. Apply a small amount of saddle soap to a clean cloth and rub it in small circles allow to dry. Then with a second clean cloth buff the area to a shine.

      Take a sponge and apply some Castor oil to it; rub the Castor oil into dark leather twice a year to prevent cracking. Rub the Castor oil in circles, then take a clean cloth and buff to a shine.

      Take a sponge and apply some petroleum jelly on it, rub the petroleum jelly into light leather twice a year to prevent cracking. Rub the petroleum jelly in circles, then take a clean cloth and buff to a shine.

      Sparingly apply a commercial leather conditioner with cotton swabs if the leather furniture begins to look parched. Leave the conditioner on for 24 hours until it is absorbed then polish with a soft clean cloth.

      If you do not want to use a commercial leather conditioner, then you can make your own, with 1 teaspoon household amonia, 4 teaspoons of vinegar and 2 cups of water. Then apply this solution to the leather furniture with a soft cloth. Then take another clean cloth and buff the area to a shine

Tips & Warnings

  • Leather furniture is very expensive, keep your pets off of the furniture to avoid unwanted paw scratches. Vacuum your furniture once a week.

  • Do not allow water to stay on your furniture; wipe up spills as soon as possible.

    i've never heard of a home recipe for leather conditioner. anybody know if it works? i use a leather conditioner called leather honey with great results.
