How to Remove the Hard Drive From a Dell Inspiron 8100

Hard drives are one of the most important parts of a computer system. Your Dell laptop's hard drive contains all the files, folders, and operating system that makes your computer run. It is sometimes necessary to remove your Dell laptop hard drive when replacing or updating your drive with a new one.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Small Phillips screwdriver
  1. Step 1

    Shut down your laptop and remove all cables. Turn laptop upside down, keeping the front of the computer facing towards you. Remove the battery.

  2. Step 2

    Look for the hard drive. The hard drive is likely located on the left side of the upside down laptop. Remove the one retaining screw holding the drive in.

  3. Step 3

    Pull out the drive slowly using your thumb and and fingers to grasp the pull tab on the hard drive bracket cover.

  4. Step 4

    Handle the drive carefully. If possible, place the hard drive in a static-free bag when storing or sending in for repair.

  5. Step 5

    Reinstall a hard drive in your Dell by simply reversing the above steps. If upgrading to another drive, you will have to remove the drive bracket from your old drive and install it on the new drive.

Tips & Warnings
  • Static electricity can damage your computer's hardware. Whenever dealing with computer hardware, first neutralize any static electricity you may be carrying by touching a metallic or conductive surface.
