Make a list of your skills. Include everything. However trivial this may seem, people often have unique talents or skills that even they themselves overlook. You may have experience in car maintenance, repairing or sewing damaged clothes or have a noodle casserole that leaves friends and neighbors raving. Perhaps you have helped children with a particular subject for school and found a knack for tutoring. The list should ideally include hobbies as well as skills. We all enjoy doing different types of activities with our free time; you might be surprised to find that your personal hobbies are someone else’s chores. We would all consider exchanging a little cash if it meant we could get out of doing something we didn’t want to do. After all, what better way to make a living than by doing something you enjoy and getting paid to do it?

Determine your personal availability. This should be written down as well, for your reference. This will allow you to be practical in your business endeavors. In order for you to creatively--and successfully--make a living, it is important to be realistic about the amount of time and efforts you are capable of contributing to your efforts. This list should include factors such as days of the week in addition to average amount of hours per working day, willingness to travel in relation to frequency and distance and so forth.

Look around your community. As you go through your list of skills and hobbies, consider each one carefully in relation to the people who could benefit from them. If you are unable to travel extreme distances regularly, you may be able to creatively make a living by addressing the needs of those closer to home. for example, if you reside in a community comprised of many young, busy professionals, dog-walking, home cleaning or even a home-cooked meal business could be very profitable, as these are typically tasks that require a great deal of time when done correctly. On the other hand if you reside in an affluent neighborhood, success could be found in an art form such as pottery, photography or jewelry making, whereas single, working parents may have a need for affordable, dependable childcare.

Spread the word about your service, craft, or other business venture. It is important to get the word out in order to determine if the idea will be a success.

5
Evaluate the success of your plan. After an adequate amount of time has passed, are you creatively making a living? If the answer is yes, congratulations. If not, move to the next item on your list, start over and try again.
