Unemployment benefits are for people who are unemployed through involuntary reasons, looking for employment, enrolled in training classes or in consideration for re-hire within 6 weeks of the last day worked. The funds are held by the state from the employers' taxes. In order to file for unemployment in Georgia, you will need to visit the Georgia Department of Labor Career Center to obtain an application.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Social security card
  • Employment history for past 18 months
  • Employment contact information
  • Personal check
  • Proof of citizenship
  • Employer separation letter
  1. Step 1

Gather social security card, employers' addresses and phone numbers for the past 18 months, personal check for direct deposit, proof of citizenship and an employer separation letter if one was provided.

  2. Step 2

Visit the Georgia Department of Labor Career Center to make a claim. The claim will be scrutinized by the center to see if all qualifications are met at a later date (see Resources below).

  3. Step 3

Fill the application out by filling in your social security number, past 18 months of employment history, reason for unemployment, date of employment discharge and citizen status.

  4. Step 4

Attend a phone conference with the labor board on the date specified in order to increase your chances of obtaining unemployment benefits.

  5. Step 5

Look in the mail for the labor board’s decision. If you were denied, you can re-file after correcting what the labor board has identified as reasons for denial.
