Change the Title of a Web Page

If you've ever looked up at the title bar of your web browser and seen only the word "home," you know how important web-page titles can be. Not only do titles help search-engine spiders rank your page, but they give valuable information to the reader of your website as to what your page is about.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • HTML editing software
  1. Step 1

There are many HTML-editing and website-creation software programs you can use. Dreamweaver and FrontPage are common ones.

  2. Step 2

Try the right click. In several editing programs, you can open the page you wish to edit and right-click on the text. "Edit page properties" or something similar will be an option you can choose. If you click on that, you can just type in a new title and then hit Save.

  3. Step 3

View HTML. If the right-click doesn't work, look for the "view HTML" tab at the bottom of the page or under the view tab. This will bring up your web page in HTML view.

  4. Step 4

Look for the "title" tag in the HTML. The text that appears at the top of your browser page is contained between the " <title> " tags in the HTML. This is the text you need to edit if you want to change your title. Use the "find" function or scroll down until you see it.

  5. Step 5

Choose descriptive text. Use several keywords in your title that tell people what your site is about. Instead of something plain like "Bob's Homepage," choose "Bob's Sportfishing and Baseball Homepage" or something that uses at least two of the words associated with your content.

  6. Step 6

Save your changes to the website and then update the site by either transferring your files using your program's publishing feature or using FTP to copy over the existing files.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't add too many keywords to your title, or it will be considered spam and not listed in search engines.
