A police report has to be detailed and specific.

When a crime is committed, someone has to document the details of the event. This has to be done with a level of detail that allows a proper investigation. Knowing how to write a comprehensive crime summary is necessary when the time comes.

      Summarize the event, making sure to communicate in a clear and succinct manner.

      Describe the scene, and state the alleged crime. Who was involved in the crime? When and where did the crime take place?

      Use simple language.

      Include statements from victims and witnesses. The statements must be verbatim to what a witness or victim said. Have the witness and/or victim sign the statement as verification that the report accurately reflects what was said. Get complete names and contact information for witnesses and victims, and include driver's license numbers when possible.

      Note any knowledge of any suspects based on crime scene, witnesses and victims, but remain objective.
