How to Become a Paramedic in Michigan

A paramedic is an emergency medical technician who has advanced to the highest EMT level. She is trained to use high tech medical equipment that is stored in the ambulance. She can insert an intravenous line, distribute medication through it and can intubate a patient so he can breathe. Many paramedics continue their education and become doctors and nurses. Here's how to become a paramedic in Michigan.

Instructions

1. Finish a two-year program that includes classroom coursework and on-the-job instruction opportunities. Upon completing a program, students must take a written exam and practical exam in order to become a certified paramedic.

2. File an application for a paramedic license after course work completion.Your application will not be complete until the State of Michigan has verification from the National Registry that you have passed the written and practical exams and verification of your course completion must be received from your Education Program Sponsor. Applications must be received within two years from course completion. With your application submit the copies of certificates or other acceptable documentation of continuing education credits and a copy of your current CPR card.

3. You must be at least 18 years of age and submit correct fees for the level for which you are applying. Do this within two years of course completion.

4. Enter your education program sponsor’s name and date of course completion.

5. Have a clean criminal record. If you do have an offense in your history, explain the offense, when it happened and what the disposition was.

6. You must submit the following information when applying for a paramedic position in Michigan: Your social security number, date of birth, address, all previous names, phone number, education program sponsor name and location, date of course completion, criminal background if any, previous licenses, if any; work history, previous licenses, disciplinary actions and results.

7. Ensure and certify your education included spinal immobilization, double lumen airway, IV therapy (fluid replacement only), endotracheal intubation, and manual defibrillation.
