Being a para-educator is a great job for anyone who enjoys working with children and teachers and likes the school environment. 1. Review the qualifications. Before becoming a para-educator you need to make sure that you are qualified. You can obtain the qualifications by going to your local Department of Education and requesting a copy as well as a list of openings. You can also find the qualifications on-line by typing into your search engine the name of the county you wish to work for followed by the words 'public schools'. For instance, typing in Orange County Public Schools, will take you to a page listing the homepage web address for Orange County Public Schools. By clicking on the appropriate page and opening up the employment link you should be able to locate the necessary qualifications for the position you desire.

2. Check out private schools in your area for even more job opportunities. Qualifications for employees in private schools tend to vary from state standards so it may be easier for you to obtain a job in the private sector. The benefits are generally not as good as the public school system.

3. Fulfill the qualifications. Make sure you meet all the qualifications to become a para-educator before applying. Many schools simply require para-professionals to have a high school diploma; however, any additional training you obtain will give you an advantage in getting hired. Local community colleges offer courses in education and taking them will help you at your job.

4. Apply for the job. You may apply on-line on the county website (or the private school website). You many also want to prepare a cover letter and resume and hand deliver them to your choice schools. Making a good impression in the front office can help your chances of having your resume passed along more quickly. Additionally, if you visit the school during the summer you may have the opportunity to hand your papers directly to the principal because there will be less staff on campus.
