It can be fun to take a road trip for a weekend. A mini vacation can help relieve the stress built up from work. Here are some things to think about when going on a road trip.

From Quick Guide: Weekend Getaway
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Thermos
  • Cooler and ice
  • Food and snacks
  • Blanket and pillow (optional)
  • Towels
  • Paper towels
  • Maps
  • Change for toll roads

    Road Trip Destinations

  1. Step 1

Choose a destination for your road trip which is a pleasant drive. The bustle of city traffic can become overwhelming when you are wanting to get away. A road trip into the country can be a leisurely drive that lets you enjoy the scenic view.

  2. Step 2

Check local places of interest. With gas prices being so high, the closer to home your road trip is the better for your wallet. There are festivals and tourist spots in every state. Many newspapers offer a coming attractions column for the reading audience. See what is happening in your area.

  3. Step 3

Make any reservations you may need in advance. You can plan your road trip itinerary for the schedule you need to keep. Set aside ample time to take in all the sites.

  4. Road Trip Preparations

  5. Step 1

Check the fluid levels in your car. Just because you have enough fuel to make the road trip does not mean there is enough oil or radiator coolant. You will also want to check windshield washer fluid levels. It is a wise choice to carry an extra quart of oil, a gallon of gas, and a gallon of water in your car when making a road trip.

  6. Step 2

Tell someone about your plans. You should give at least one person the route you will be taking for your road trip. If there are any problems, this gives a good starting reference to help find you.

  7. Step 3

Check for road construction which may be occurring between you and your road trip destination. You will want to find detours around the construction zones so you do not get caught up in the heavy traffic.

  8. Step 4

Pack the vehicle in a sensible manner. Putting the CDs you will want to listen to under the suitcase in the trunk is not good planning. You do not have to keep the cooler close to you. Grab a drink or two for now and grab a couple more when you stop for refueling or rest breaks.

  9. Step 5

Go over the map for your road trip before you leave. Knowing how you are getting to your destination is much easier than trying to find it while driving. If you know you will be looking for Interstate 77 North after you get onto Interstate 70 East then you are prepared. You can get lost if you have to check for the next leg of the road trip as you are driving. Some sections of highway only last a mile for certain destinations.

  10. Road Trip Emergencies

  11. Step 1

Check your spare tire to make sure it is in good repair. Keep the tire and jack within easy access. It can be frustrating to dig through a mound of luggage to find the spare or jack.

  12. Step 2

Buy a road side emergency kit for your vehicle when taking any road trips. These kits come with flares, markers and an emergency sign. Many people have been injured while on the side of the road because passing motorists did not see them.

  13. Step 3

Use a prepaid cell phone if you do not usually have one. A prepaid phone allows you to call 911 in case of emergencies.

  14. Step 4

Take frequent breaks while driving during your road trip. You can become tired quickly while behind the wheel of a car. Keep the radio playing, roll the window down, or play a road trip game to stay awake if you find yourself tired. When it is safe to pull over to take a break then do so immediately.

  15. Step 5

Keep the vehicle free of debris while on your road trip. Accidents can occur while driving because a soda can rolled under the brake pedal. Empty your trash at the proper receptacles while on your road trip.

Tips & Warnings
  • Keep snacks refreshing like fresh fruit or vegetables.
  • Make up sandwiches ahead of time but keep the condiments separate. Use squeeze bottles for the mustard and mayo so the bread does not get soggy.
  • Velcro a cup to the dash for change so it is handy when you run across a toll road.
  • Only take what you will need for your road trip. A cluttered vehicle can become a hazard.
