This is an easy and quick way to teach your new puppy to lay down like a nice, polite pup!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Puppy
  • Treats
  • Patience
  1. Step 1

Bring your pup to your training space, which should be a indoor, relatively distraction free zone away from the dog's sleeping area and toys.

  2. Step 2

    Command your pup to sit.

  3. Step 3

Take a treat in your hand and show it to your pup, bringing it right in front of her nose. Slowly bring the treat down to lay directly between your puppy's paws, saying "Lie Down".

  4. Step 4

The first time or two she may not understand what you're getting at, so press between her shoulderblades gently with only two fingers.

  5. Step 5
Not exactly the lie down you're looking for, but it works!
Not exactly the lie down you're looking for, but it works!

The second her elbows touch the floor, give her the treat. Raising your voice an octave (low tones are perceived as negative by dogs) say, "Good lie down!" and praise and pat and pet your pup.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't overtrain! Do this only a twice a day, 10 minutes at a time.
  • Always end a training session on a positive note. If you can't get your pup to lie down, command her to sit (or some command she definitely knows) and congratulate her for that.
