Get the Most From Your Doctor's Appointment

You've waited for an hour to see the doctor. You can't remember the name of the new medication you're taking from the other doctor. And wasn't there something else you wanted to ask? Make the most of your doctor's appointment by planning ahead.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Before you go to the doctor, make a list of everything that's bothering you. It doesn't matter if it seems insignificant. If your doctor seems to focus on one concern, remind him/her that you have many concerns. It's possible that they are related. You waited to get in to the appointment, so make the most of it!

  2. Step 2

Put all your medication in a ziplock bag and bring it with you. It doesn't matter if it's over the counter medicine or even medicine that you haven't been taking for awhile. Bring it all.

  3. Step 3

Bring the name and address of any other doctor you are seeing. Your doctor may need to confer with the other doctor, and this will save time if you have the information right there. Besides, many of us forget the names of other doctors. At least I do.

  4. Step 4

Bring a pen and notebook to write down everything the doctor says. Sometimes when doctors prescribe medicine, the pharmacy will put incorrect directions on the label. Write down all directions and pertinent information. This is also a good time to clarify with the doctor why he/she is prescribing this medicine.

  5. Step 5

Don't be afraid to ask why. If you don't understand the diagnosis, ask for a clarification. Doctors are very willing to explain.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make a copy of your prescriptions before going to the pharmacy.
  • For less confusion, fill all your prescriptions at the same pharmacy.
