How to - A Buttermilk Recipe

Buttermilk isn't a food item I purchase on a regular basis, but there is an easy buttermilk recipe. Now and then I come across a recipe that calls for buttermilk. Here are three different versions of a buttermilk recipe using other (more common) items in your kitchen. Buttermilk is sometimes referred to as sour milk.

Things You’ll Need:

• 1 cup milk
• 1 ¾ Tablespoon cream of tartar
• OR 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
• OR 1 Tablespoon white vinegar

1. Have the need for buttermilk in a recipe. The next steps are the three different variations of a buttermilk recipe.
2. To create 1 cup of buttermilk, add 1 ¾ Tablespoons of cream of tartar to 1 cup of milk.
3. Or, add 1 Tablespoon of lemon juice to one cup of milk.
4. Or, add 1 Tablespoon of white vinegar to one cup of milk.
5. No matter which ingredient you choose to add to the milk, once it is added, allow the mixture to stand for 5 to 10 minutes.
6. Use the substitute for buttermilk in your recipe.

Tips & Warnings

• For some recipes, I've also substituted plain yogurt or plain sour cream as a substitute for buttermilk.
