Things You'll Need:
- Elevated tub(for your back) or large sink with a hose and nozzle
- Shampoo based on your dog's skin condition
- Cotton Balls
- Ear Cleaner
- Rubber mat so your dog doesn't slip while bathing
- Leash or lanyard to keep your dog from jumping out of the tub and getting injured.
- Blow Dryer
- Terry Cotton Towels
- Paper Towels
-
Step 1
Lift your pug gently under hips and chest and place your little buddy on a the rubber mat in the tub.
-
Step 2
Secure puggy with a lead so 'making a run for it' is not an option
-
Step 3
Insert small cotton balls into each ear to prevent infection.
-
Step 4
Test the water temperature BEFORE wetting the dog's fur. Once it is at a mild warm temperature, you will then wet your dog's fur from head to tail and all over.
-
Step 5
Pugs are like most small breed dogs, in the aspect that they need to have their anal glands expelled. This can be a daunting, nauseating task for the beginner, so don't be afraid to ask for help at your dog groomers. But if you are up to the challenge, here's how it's done:
(you may want rubber gloves for this)....place your thumb and index finger on both sides of your pugs anus, and gently press inward and squeeze like a pimple.....gross right?...but necessary, or else it will end up at home, or in the car, or somewhere you don't want it to be!
After you have released the anal fluid, you will want to wash away all traces of it, and then use a scented shampoo to cover up the smell on your dog's rear end....and trust me, you WILL smell it!...and then rinse immediately. -
Step 6
Next, select your shampoo based on the pug's skin condition, and lather up the entire dog, but be careful around its eyes and mouth, and remember to get those hard to reach areas such as bottom of feet, butt, belly, etc., these are the dirtiest parts of your dog!
-
Step 7
Most likely, if you have a special shampoo from a vet, your little pup will need to soak for about 10 minutes before rinsing.(This is also true when using flea shampoo.)
-
Step 8
After your pug is completley lathered, and appropriate time has gone by, gently start to rinse from the head on down to the tail.(Depending on whether your pug has a single or double coat, this may take several rinses to get all of the shampoo out....we don't want an itchy pug at home now, do we?)
-
Step 9
Once you have rinsed all the shampoo out, it is time to move on to the ears and folds. I like to dry off the dog's head first, and let them shake a few times before toweling the rest of their body....(this way will use less towels.)
Remove the cotton balls from your pug's ears. Then grab some clean, dry, cotton balls, and soak some ear cleaner on them. Now you will gently remove all of the wax build-up in the ears, until no more is present.(this may take many cotton balls) -
Step 10
Now onto the folds. Your pug is unique in the fact that it needs to have its face folds cleaned. For this, you should do the same as with the ears, and take the cleaner to some more cotton balls, and gently slide along the inside of the folds until there is no more gunk.
-
Step 11
You should also clean areas under eyes(be careful!), mouth, and chin with the ear cleaner. This will make your pug's face smell great, and prevent a nasty infection of any folds.
-
Step 12
Now you can towel off the rest of your dog, until no more water is able to be toweled off.
-
Step 13
Next, is the blow dryer. I like to place small cotton balls in puggy's ears again, because they don't like the loud noises, and will remain calmer for the drying process...
Take your time here, as it is very important to get all of those damp spots dry to prevent hot spots...(especially on the butt, armpits, feet, around neck)
Don't worry about the face or ears for now, that's next. -
Step 14
After your pug is 99% dried off, then take paper towels and gently dry the areas around the face, ears, chin, etc...and run some DRY cotton balls through the folds and ears to catch excess moisture.
-
Step 15
Check with the groomer for a nail trim, as pugs are infamous for putting up a fight when it comes to their nails.
-
Step 16
Finally, give your pug a nice treat for a job well done!
