How to Harvest and Store Filberts or Hazelnuts

Filberts or hazelnuts add flavor to many dishes and are especially good when roasted and salted. They produce crops from fall into winter, though the trees may bear nuts only in alternate years.

        Gather nuts once they've dropped to the ground.

        Spread shells in the sun to dry. Once nuts are dry enough, kernels will snap when bent once.

        Store in the shell at cool temperatures with high humidity for several weeks. Shell nuts and freeze them for longer storage.
