How to Harvest and Store Chestnuts

"Chestnuts roasting on an open fire ..." and visions of the chestnut tree on the village green may evoke warm memories, even if you've never tried a roasted chestnut or seen a village green. Here's how you can enjoy the fall harvest of chestnuts from a tree near you.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Baskets
  • Gardening Gloves
  • Knife
  • Nutcrackers
  • Knife
  • Baskets
  1. Step 1

    Pick when the nuts fall to the ground, beginning in September.

  2. Step 2

    Remove nuts from hulls and spread to dry in the sun for 1 to 2 days. In very hot climates, dry chestnuts in the shade.

  3. Step 3

    Store in a cool, dry place for several months.
