How to Harvest and Store Almonds

These tasty nuts can be hard to grow unless climatic and soil conditions are just right, but if you're lucky enough to live in an almond-friendly area, you'll be rewarded with a delicious harvest beginning in late summer.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gardening Gloves
  • Knife
  • Nutcrackers
  • Knife
  1. Step 1

    Knock nuts from trees once the hulls have cracked open and the kernels are partially dry.

  2. Step 2

    Slit the hulls, then remove shells and spread them in the sun. Let dry for 1 to 2 days, until the kernels rattle in the shells.

  3. Step 3

    Gather and use immediately, or store for 6 months in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place.

Tips & Warnings
  • Almonds can be eaten raw or roasted or used in salads, baked dishes and desserts.

on 9/30/2008 Baganut makes nut harvesters that work on Almonds. They are easy to push or can be pulled behind a trailer/ATV/mower. They start at $375 but are well worth it!

on 8/20/2008 I have a almond tree that produces well but the nut is small and shrunk. Why?
