With shaving often arrives the uncomfortable and unattractive razor burn that follows. This article is designed to help you avoid the skin irritation that is bothersome, in just a few easy steps.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Sharp/new razor
  • Lathering agent (body wash, shaving gel/cream, etc)
  • Baby Powder
  • Lotion containing aloe vera
Step1
First, allow your skin to soak in warm water for a few minutes to open the pores of the skin. Doing so, opens pores and softens hair, making it a smoother shaving surface.
Step2
When shaving, move the razor in the direction of hair growth. This minimizes friction and leaves the hair follicles in the same direction of growth, reducing the likelihood of irritation. Also keep in mind to try to only go over each area one time, the more times you repetitively shave over the same area, the more bumps you will cause.
Step3
Remember to apply as little pressure to the razor as possible. If you use a new, sharp blade it should not require very much pressure to remove the hair. The more pressure you apply the more likely you will cause skin irritation.
Step4
Always use a rich, lathering cleanser or shaving cream. Soap often dehydrates skin and can also damage and dull razor blades more than products designed for shaving. Creams and body washes are more moisturizing for the skin and provide a slicker surface for the razor to glide on, again creating less friction.
Step5
Rinse thoroughly after shaving and pat dry. Then, first apply a small amount of an moisturizer that contains aloe vera. The lotion helps keep the skin soft and the aloe helps cool irritated skin. Also, several products designed for shaven skin is available. I found these items work well as they are a good blend of moisture and aloe to help prevent razor burn.
Step6
Gently apply a small amount of baby powder to the shaved areas to soak up any remaining liquid and keep skin soft and dry. Allow skin to dry for a few minutes before covering with clothing.

Tips & Warnings

  • Razors that contain a moisture strip work well by creating a smoother shave.
  • Using a razor with fewer blades can help eliminate problems. The more blades, the more times you shave each area of skin which is unnecessary and causes bumps.
