How to Make Steamed Vegetables

There are few things less appetizing than than a wilted and soggy mound of water depleted vegetables. The trick to enjoying fresh and delicious vegetables which are as vibrant and tasteful as they were when they were freshly picked, is all in the cooking method.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • steamer basket
  • electric steamer
  • pot
  • water
  1. Step 1

    If you have a steamer basket, place it over a boiling pot of water and place into the pot, just above the water. This can be a precarious situation and the vegetables will become over cooked if your aren't watching and testing for doneness

    An electric vegetable steamer is inexpensive and easy to use, and has a handy timer so you can't forget about your veggies. Ten to twelve minutes will cook virtually any vegetable to perfection. Make sure to remove the vegetables from heat as soon as the times goes off.

    You also can quickly place your veggies in boiling water with a pinch or two of salt for three to four minutes. As soon as the vegetable turns a brighter color than it's original and has lost a bit of it's rigidness, test for doneness and remove from heat. Rinse with cold water to stop the cooking process.
