If you're leaving on a road trip and you expect to be on the road for a while I suggest you do something to help keep your mind active during the trip.
Step2
Notebook
After getting on the road, get out a notebook. Start a game where you look at all the license plates of the cars that you see on the road on the way to your destination.
Step3
Every time you see a new state that you haven't seen yet, write it on your list. By the end of the trip see how many states you have been able to add to your list.
Step4
I find it interesting to keep track of how many you saw on one vacation, and then the next vacation you take, see if you can find more. You'll likely find yourself looking at the cars going by even when your sightseeing because you want to see new states!
Tips & Warnings
Have everyone join in, it is more fun when more people participate.
Most definitely the driver shouldn't be the one writing. I'm thinking more on the family vacation front, when Dad is driving Mom could be writing or so on! No driving and writing!
