We've all had the same problem with addressing wedding invitations--how do you address a single mom? What about step family? Here are all the answers you need--and if I'm missing any, be sure to leave a comment and let me know!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wedding invitations
  • Address and guest list
  • Pen and envelopes
  1. Step 1

If you have a female guest that is single and not married, you would address as "Ms. Sally Brown."

  2. Step 2

If you have a female guest that is divorced, but still uses her married name, you would address as "Mrs. Sally Rose."

  3. Step 3

If you have a female guest that is divorced and now uses her maiden name, you would address her as a single female. "Ms. Sally Brown."

  4. Step 4

If you have a male guest that is unmarried, address as "Mr. Bobby Rose."

  5. Step 5

If you have a married couple, you would address as "Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Rose."

  6. Step 6

If you have a married couple, but the female kept her maiden name, you would address as "Mrs. Sally Brown & Mr. Bobby Rose."

  7. Step 7

If you have an unmarried couple that does not live with each other, address the invitation to the closer friend. Address her as a single female. "Ms. Sally Brown."

  8. Step 8

If you have an unmarried couple that lives with each other, you would address to both as single people but you would do so alphabetically by last name. So, in the case of Sally and Bobby, it would be "Ms. Sally Brown & Mr. Bobby Rose."

  9. Step 9

If you have a same gender couple, address alphabetically by their last names. "Ms. Sally Brown & Ms. Susan Smith."

  10. Step 10

Children? Children under 18 are not included on the outside envelope. Children over the age of 18 should be sent their own wedding invitation, even if you are already sending one to their parents and they live at home with them.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always use your best handwriting--the address that is written on the envelope is the first thing most people will read--next being the return address. Take your time and make it look nice--and don't have your husband-to-be do it if his handwriting is autrotious!
  • Make sure the addresses you have are correct--you don't want one person's invite to come back with the incorrect address, and then their friends get one. How awkward! Double check the addresses online if you are in doubt.
  • Send them all out at once--otherwise, someone might get their before someone else and cause a commotion over not being invited!

on 5/24/2009 What if you are inviting a married couple, but you only know the name of the woman? Do you address it Mr. and Mrs. (Last Name)? I have a number of guests where I only know the woman!
