How to handle finding a stray animal

If you come across a dog/cat, there are steps you can take to help the dog/cat be in a safe home.

Things You’ll Need:

• Computer
• Phone
• Transportation

1. Check for a collar on the dog/cat.
2. Check to see if the dog/cat is friendly. If it is, grab the pet.
3. Walk around the area you are in to see if there is an owner looking for their pet.
4. Put an ad in your local Craigslist stating you have found a pet.
5. Go to Petfinder.com and place a free classified ad stating you found a pet.
6. Go to your local humane society and let them know you found a pet.
7. See if your local paper will let you write a free found ad for the pet you found.
8. Contact the local police station and let them know you found the pet. If someone says their pet was stolen later on, you could get in trouble for not letting the police know.
9. Take the pet to a vet and see if there is a microchip.
10. Place fliers up at local grocery stores in case the owner runs across it.
11. Check to see what the local laws are on adopting out pets that have been found. If that time has passed, try to find a suitable home for the pet if you don't want to keep it.
