How to Enjoy Jazz

Jazz is a very expressive genre of music. But there's a challenge to those who cannot understand its complexities.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

Step1
Jazz is a very special genre of music which combines African rhythms with Western instruments and influences. However, some just cannot seem to enjoy its complicated rhythms and runs. Listen to some funk or 70's rock. Since jazz is its origin, it's full of jazz.
Step2
Listen to Jazz arrangements of your favorite pop and traditional songs. For instance, Oscar Peterson, probably the second most renowned Jazz pianist, has his Jazz arrangement of "Waltz for Debbie." John Coltrane has his arrangement of "My Favourite Things."
Step3
Do not attempt to listen to "Free Jazz" or "Modern Jazz." Instead listen to Classic Jazz. It is much more enjoyable among new listeners.

Tips & Warnings

  • I enjoy artists Bevan Manson, Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Artie Shaw, Stan Kenton, and John Coltrane. There are others, but these are the majors.
  • Favorite songs of mine include "Gone With the Wind (Stan Kenton)," "Lullaby of Birdland," "I've Got Rhythm (Art Tatum)," and "After You've Gone (Art Tatum)."
