Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

PROTECT POROUS SURFACES (before you color). Most haircolor will instantly stain all porous (absorbent) surfaces, and not just fabric. Except for the old, clean towel you'll use later, remove all textiles from the area (towels, clothing, mats, etc.). Move your shower curtain to one end of the tub, twist it loosely, and wrap it over the curtain rod so it clears your head. Spray foaming bathroom cleaner thoroughly on tub and tub walls, especially grouted and caulked areas.

  2. Step 2

PROTECT YOUR SKIN. Wearing your zip- or button-front top (something you can remove without pulling it over your head), apply a thin coat of petroleum jelly or heavy moisturizer on your skin along your hairline and on your ears. If you wish, protect the rest of your face with your favorite masque. After you've applied the color, wipe off any color on your face or other skin with a damp, soapy tissue or cotton pad.

  3. Step 3

PROTECT POROUS SURFACES (while you color). Mix and apply your color over the tub. After you've applied your color, cover your hair with the plastic grocery bag. This will help allow you to move around while you wait, without transferring hair color to walls, door jambs, etc. Open the bag and hold one handle in each hand. Start by scooping the back of your head into the bag, then pulling the handles forward toward your forehead. Tie the handles together over your forehead (think Aunt Jemima; you may need to stretch them slightly). Try to keep the bagged area loose, so minimal hair color sticks to it, but snug enough at the forehead not to fall. With the sponge, wipe up any color that has spilled on your tub or elsewhere. Dispose of color mixing bottles in haircolor box.

  4. Step 4

RINSE AND CLEAN UP. When you're ready to rinse your hair, remove your clothing and step into the tub. Carefully replace the curtain. Carefully remove bag and dispose of it in the haircolor box. Rinse your hair carefully, minimizing any excess head movement (flipping, shaking) and haircolor/rinse water splatter. Rinse off masque and finish your shower. Complete wiping down and rinsing tub area. Use your old towel to dry off your body and wrap your hair.

Congratulations! You've just colored your hair, cleaned your tub, and given your face a spa treatment - without redecorating your bathroom with hair color.

Tips & Warnings
  • This is a great activity for boyfriend/husband poker nights and fishing trip weekends. He only needs to know the results, not how you got there, right?
  • Advanced multi-tasking tip: If you use hair depilating lotion products (like Nair), use your waiting time to apply your depilator (usually 4-10 minutes before your hair color is complete) and rinse off EVERYTHING at the same time. See depilator package instructions for appropriate time allowances.
  • Before you proceed with coloring your hair, please make sure you read the instruction insert provided by the manufacturer thoroughly and perform any color check and allergy tests indicated. You don't want to turn your budget beauty secret into a public disaster or ER visit!
  • The plastic bag should cover your HAIR ONLY - no plastic bag should ever be used over your face area, including and especially your nose and mouth.
