Step 1
Food grade plastic containers are okay for in-home birdseed storage. Avoid thin plastics because they easily break.
-
Step 2
If you have mice or other pests in your home, store small amounts of birdseed in cookie or cracker tins.
-
Step 3
Large popcorn tins are good for storing larger amounts of birdseed in the home. I know several ladies who keep these tins filled beside the kitchen door so that they can feed the birds every morning.
-
Step 4
If you are storing large amounts of birdseed, keep the seed in a clean, dry galvanized metal trash can. Buy one with a tight fitting lid. If you are storing the can where animals can get to it, secure the lid with a heavy stone or bungee cord.
-
Step 5
Where you store the birdseed is as important as what you store the seed in. Keep seed in a cool place, such as the garage or in the shade, to help prevent bug infestations.
