Instructions

    • 1

First off, you'll want an eBay account in good standing, and with the minimal amount of feedback needed for selling online. (Please check eBay's site for this information--they're always changing their rules and regulations.)

    • 2

Raid their closet. Pull out anything that doesn't fit anymore, and sort them by gender and brand. Brands that sell well on eBay when it comes to kid's clothes are Baby Gap, Gap Kids, Gymboree, Old Navy, Under Armor, and Nike, among others.

    • 3

Take photos. A lot of photos. Take close-up photos of buttons, embroidery, beading, or any stains or flaws. People want to see everything of interest on the item. If you take a picture from far away, they won't be able to see the parts of the clothing that make it unique, like the neat buttons or cool zipper pull.

    • 4

Include measurements, material, and washing information. This will save you from answering a lot of eBay questions, so save yourself some time and do it from the start.

    • 5

List, list, list! Be sure to include gender of clothing, brand name (spell it correctly--I can't stress the importance!), size, color, and any other information that people would want to know upfront. Also, list the condition and know the terminology on eBay--EUC is "excellent used condition," GUC is "good used condition," NWT means "New with tags," NWOT means "new without tags," and LN means "like new." People who shop for clothes on eBay will know these and be searching for them in the search box, so be prepared and know what you're posting.

    • 6

Auction or buy it now? It's up to you! Do some research on completed listings to see the average price range for items of that brand. That will give you a good idea of how to list it. If the previously sold items went for anywhere from $20-$30, you could list it at $20 to sell it fast or $25 to make a little more profit.

    • 7

Shipping and handling is important! Keep your handling costs low to avoid over-inflating your S&H charges--no one likes to buy a deal and get sticker shock when it comes time to pay--this will likely result in many non-paying bidders. You can estimate shipping costs at usps.com if you are unsure of mailing rates.

When it comes to kid's clothes, the time your auction ends can be crucial to the selling price. Remember, stay-at-home moms are shopping for their little ones during the day during their nap time, so time your auctions accordingly. Keep in mind time zone differences, as well.

Enjoy your profits! Buy your kids some great toys, or better yet--buy them a new wardrobe!

Tips & Warnings

  • Take great pictures. Take close-ups of embroidery, beading or any noticeable stains or flaws.

  • It's all about the brand names--if your clothes aren't brand name, but are the same size, maybe you could group them together into a lot and sell them that way. But don't expect a huge profit--people are looking online for specific brands, not necessarily lots in the same size of random clothing brands.

  • Only sell items in excellent condition. If they are stained, have holes, or are "beyond repair," who will want to buy them? If you don't want to wear them, why should someone else want to?

  • Be clear in your descriptions about the article. Buyers would rather be pleasantly surprised than disappointed.

  • Keep your shipping and handling costs reasonable--eBay frowns upon inflated shipping charges, and can lower your standings in eBay searches. So be reasonable.
