Make a Recycled Christmas Tree Drum Ornament

With the motto, "don't throw it out", you can create anything out of something. We created this drum ornament using a plastic black hairspray cap and other items.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 recycled plastic hairspray cap
  • 3 1/2 to 4 inch square of tan or cream colored cotton material
  • Fabric stiffener
  • recycled rubber band
  • 1/4 inch thick red ribbon
  • 2 toothpicks
  • green acrylic paint
  • tacky glue
  • 2 small black pom poms, or recycled beads from broken jewelry
  • 1 recycled clean foam meat tray
  • scissors
  • small paint brush or Q-tip to paint with
  1. Step 1

Lay a piece of waxed paper under your cap, or use your foam tray to hold it. Cover your material piece with stiffener following directions on bottle.

  2. Step 2

On a piece of waxed paper, or waxed bag from a cereal box, (or your foam tray) drape your piece of fabric over the open end of the can.

  3. Step 3

Wrap your rubber band around the top to hold. Let dry

  4. Step 4

With scissors, snip the points off of your toothpicks and paint green. Stick them upright in the foam try to dry.

  5. Step 5

When toothpicks are dry, glue your pom poms or beads on the ends of the toothpicks and let dry.

  6. Step 6

With about 24 inches of 1/4 inch thick red ribbon, tie around the top of hairspray cap, covering the rubber band, tie in a knot, then tie leaving a hanger loop.

  7. Step 7

Glue your toothpick drum sticks to the top of the drum and let dry.

  8. Step 8

If you desire, glue a Christmas bell, flower, or ribbon at the top of the drum where you first knotted around it.

  9. Step 9

Enjoy your ornament or give it away.

Tips & Warnings
  • You don't even have to use the stiffener. You can simply pull your material tight still using a rubber band.
  • Use green ribbon, and paint the drum sticks red.
  • Use leftover scraps of materials, t-shirts, etc.
  • Shop for material pieces at thrift stores or S.C.R.A.P. stores
  • Use caution with sharp scissors
