A guide to touching up scratches and chips on your automotive paint job.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Automotive Touch-up Paint
  • 1000-Grit Wet/Dry Sandpaper
  • 1500-Grit Wet/Dry Sandpaper
  • 2000-Grit Wet/Dry Sandpaper
  • Rubbing Compound
  • Car Polish (For best results use multiple polishes with decreasing cutting power)
  1. Step 1

Determine the area that requires a touch-up.

  2. Step 2

Prep it for paint, clean it very well with a product of your choice. Make sure all traces of wax, grime, dust, etc is GONE or your touch-up job will not last. It may look good originally however it will flake off and require future work if not prepped correctly.

  3. Step 3

For scratches: Take a toothpick and dip it in the touch-up paint, get a very small amount, if you get too much you might overfill the scratch or get it on unwanted parts of the car.

  4. Step 4

Take the toothpick and run it along the scratch. YOU DO NOT NEED TO FILL THE ENTIRE SCRATCH! Allow to dry. Apply multiple coats repeating this procedure until the paint has filled the scratch in completely and is slightly raised from the rest of the paint. Keyword - Slightly

  5. Step 5

Soak your sandpaper in water for at least 30 minutes before using. Sand, with a small sanding block, the scratch down so you can't feel the difference between the scratch and the paint surrounding it. Continue increasing the sandpaper grit until 2000. Be careful not to sand too much as you could screw up surrounding paint.

  6. Step 6

Next, use your rubbing compound to continue reducing the scratches

  7. Step 7

Next use your polish to polish away the scratches, it may be necessary to using variable "Cut" levels of polish to get the perfect shine.

  8. Step 8

Clean off and enjoy your paint! If done properly the scratch should not be visible, or very very close to invisible.

Tips & Warnings
  • Soak your sandpaper for as long as possible
  • Use as small of a sanding block as possible, to have the least amount of scratch removal later.
  • Keep the area being sanded very wet, it will help.
  • Apply many coats not one big coat, you'll thank yourself later
  • Sanding can be very dangerous to your finish if done improperly
