No matter how nervous you are, appear relaxed. Have self confidence and show them that you are happy to be there. Thank the audience and compliment them. Begin with a personal story about yourself as it relates to the audience or the subject. Use humor IF and only if you are good with your delivery of it.

Be sincere and use natural gestures with your hands. Speak with authority and vary your voice to keep their attention. Be energetic and express enthusiasm.

Margaret Thatcher once said, "Never speak to an audience about something they know more about than you." Heed her advice. In addition, never use slang language and master the power of language.
Stay on message. Do not speak about ten different issues.

Remember the five B's . . . Be Brief Brother Be Brief! No one, no where likes long speeches. Too much of a good thing is too much. End your speech on a good note and be gracious to your audience by speaking with them if they approach you after the speech.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stay calm, cool and collected - or at least appear to be.

  • Remember that your audience is comprised of people - just like you.

  • If you are not good at humor, do not use it. Joke telling is great IF you are good at it. Otherwise it can be a huge mistake in public speaking.
