How to Buy a Cedar Plank for Grilling

Salmon is delicious when grilled on a cedar plank. But can you use just any piece of cedar wood to grill salmon? Does this Spark an idea?

      You must use untreated cedar for grilling and cooking food. Many cedar boards have been pretreated with fire retardant and other chemicals.

      Do not use cedar roof shingles or cedar fence boards as these may have been chemically treated.

      Many lumbar yards carry untreated cedar wood planks and they can trim these down into smaller sizes (12 inches for example) and plane the wood down for you (for a fee).

      Many do-it-yourself home improvement centers sell cedar planks that are specifically made for cooking and grilling. These are often located near the barbecue grills.

      If you decide not to have your own cedar plank planed and cut by a lumbar yard, you may buy one at a kitchen store as well.
