Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Step1
In South Carolina, the South Carolina Department of Insurance will require you to take a 60 hour course at an approved educational institution. Surety bondsmen have to take more hours than a runner bondsman because runners are different from surety bondsman because surety bondsman are actual licensed insurance agents.
Step2
After fulfilling the educational requirements, you have to select the county of business for which you will write bonds and pay the required fees. In South Carolina, a person may elect to do business in more than one SC county; however, you must pay one hundred fifty dollars per year to the clerk of court in the county or counties you wish to write bonds.
Step3
After education and staking the counties you're going to do business, you must first of all pledge collateral and then purchase your bondsman license. Before you start your career as a bondsman, you must pledge and maintain collateral in the minimum of $10,000. After pledging, you can write up to 4 times your collateral in bonds (ex. if you have $30,000 in collateral, you can write up to $120,000 in bonds). After pledging, a professional bondsman must pay $400 to the South Carolina Department of Insurance before you can officially begin writing bonds.
