Cal Rikpen has devoted his post-MLB career to promoting youth baseball, particularly to teaching kids how to play and love the game "The Ripken Way." In order for kids to learn, though, they need to have coaches and parents who understand Cal's philosophy, and to this end the Ripken Baseball organization offers a number of Ripken Coaching Clinics for parents, youth league coaches, and anyone who loves the game of baseball.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check the website to find out the dates of the next coaching clinics. Clinics are usually held in the winter months before the baseball season starts, and the dates are announced the summer before.

  2. Step 2

Determine the closest location to you. Clinics are often held near Baltimore, MD (both Cal and Billy Ripken live in this area), and have been held in other locations including Atlanta, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Long Island, Pittsburgh, Northern Virginia and even Shanghai, China.

  3. Step 3

Show up right on time (or even a little bit early) so you don't miss a minute of your introduction to "The Ripken Way." This includes an explanation of the four main principles: Keep It Simple, Explain Why, Celebrate the Individual, and Make It Fun.

  4. Step 4

Pay close attention to all of the different instructional blocks. During the course of the day you will learn about all aspects of the game, including hitting, pitching, and fielding as well as practice planning and game preparation.

  5. Step 5

Ask questions during the designated "Q&A" sessions throughout the clinic. These sessions will allow you to interact with Cal Ripken himself as well as with is brother Billy, former MLB second baseman, and with John Habyan, who pitched for the Baltimore Orioles from 1985-1988.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may want to prepare for the clinic by reading some of the books written by Cal and Billy Ripken or watch the DVDs they've produced about "The Ripken Way."
