Graphic design programs are more advanced then they have ever been before. New versions continue to add improvements. Perhaps the greatest innovation to make its way into graphic design programs over the past decade is that of being able to add layers. This newer feature allows designers to break up an image or add multiple images and blend channels to one final image.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paint Shop Pro Photo XI
  • Computer
  • Image file
  1. Step 1

Open and run the application. You will need to left click on the application icon in order to open and run this program.

  2. Step 2

Open the desired image file. To open a desired image file scroll to the “File” tab on the command bar and click “Open.” Browse to the desired image file and click “Open.”

  3. Step 3

Insert a new vector layer. To create a new vector layer, scroll to the “Layers” tab on the command bar and left click; a submenu will open. Select “New Vector Layer” and left click; a new vector layer properties box will open. There are two tabs on this box, “General” and “Blend Ranges.” Under the “General” tab you can name the layer, select from a variety of blend modes from a drop-down menu that lists them, choose the opacity in the opacity box and finally, select the link-set. You can also choose to highlight the layer in the layer palette by checking the box on the lower left. Under the “Blend Rages” tab you can select the blend range of the current layer and the one beneath by simply dragging the arrows on the corresponding palettes within the box. You can also select the type of blend channel from the “Blend Channels” drop-down menu. Click “OK” when finished to add the layer.

  4. Step 4

Save the image file. To save your edited image, scroll to the “File” tab on the command bar and select “Save As.” Select the desired file format and location, and click “Save.”

Tips & Warnings
  • You can create as many layers as you like. To remove them, simply delete them from the layers palette.
  • Always save a copy of the image before making any edits so you can backtrack if necessary.
